Relevant stakeholders that hold the key to sustainable shipping

Sustainable Shipping - Stakeholders

Ship Owners

With the IMO putting more strict regulations to vessel operation, energy distributors are looking for ship owners that can charter a vessel with maximum efficiency. While the hydrocarbon fuels are receiving tighter restrictions, carbon-zero fuels require no efficiency regulation. To survive in the competitive LPG trading sector, ship owners have to be willing to take a 'big leap' towards sustainable technologies.

Ship Builders

No matter how optimistic the ship owners are at sustainable shipping, the ship builders are the ones installing the engines onto the vessels ultimately. Without cooperation of the engineers, this XeroCarbon engine concept will remain a mere plan. In the urgent situation of global warming, it is necessary for the whole industry to come together to work towards the same goal.

Authorities

To stably provide ammonia and hydrogen to the port, a well-planned infrastructure is necessary. Pipelines need to connect green ammonia plants to storage tanks in ports for refueling vessels. Conversations must happen between ship management companies and the authorities to secure a spot for ammonia/hydrogen storage in ports. Since hydrogen transportation is too inefficient compared to ammonia due to its low volumetric density, there are alternatives methods to 'crack' ammonia into hydrogen at the port, eliminating the need for hydrogen transportation.
